Gear Up & Ride Chadwick's Epic Trails

Located within the sprawling Mark Twain National Forest, the Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV Use Area offers 80 miles of trails designed for off-road vehicle enthusiasts. This area is a go-to destination for riders looking to experience the rugged terrain and natural beauty of the Ozarks. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Chadwick provides a thrilling adventure in a well-maintained environment. The trails at Chadwick wind in and out of deep, forested hollows and down long ridgetops. It is possible to spend a full day riding without having to backtrack.

Recreational Activities

The area is open to a variety of off-road vehicles, including motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs. With 80 miles of trails ranging from easy to difficult, riders of all skill levels can find a suitable route. The trail system is well-marked and offers a diverse riding experience, from open forest roads to more technical, rocky paths. Trail loops are connected, allowing riders to customize their adventure based on difficulty and distance.

Permits & Requirements

All riders must obtain a daily or annual riding permit. These permits are available for purchase at local vendors or online through the Mark Twain National Forest website. Riders are required to wear helmets and comply with U.S. Forest Service regulations for off-road vehicles. Permits help maintain the trails and ensure the area remains safe and enjoyable for all users.

Safety & Regulations

The Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV Use Area includes a designated trials bike area and a fun off-trail riding zone. Outside of this area, riders MUST stay on numbered trails. Off-trail riding is strictly prohibited, and it’s essential to avoid traveling on closed routes or engaging in hill climbing. Helmets are required for riders under 18 and recommended for all others. All motorized vehicles are required to have a muffler and spark arrestor for environmental and safety purposes. Riders should check with the Ava Ranger District office for trail conditions and closures before visiting. For more information on rules and regulations, please visit the U.S. Forest Service.

Trail Highlights

  • Easy Trails: Several beginner-friendly trails offer smooth riding with minimal obstacles, perfect for less experienced riders or those looking for a more leisurely ride.
  • Moderate Trails: Intermediate trails feature more rugged terrain, with rocks, hills, and narrow paths that require more technical skill.
  • Difficult Trails: For the experienced rider, Chadwick’s difficult trails offer steep climbs, rocky outcrops, and challenging switchbacks. These trails test both skill and endurance, rewarding riders with stunning views of the Ozarks.

Camping & Amenities

Primitive camping is available at the Cobb Ridge Campground, which is located near the trail system. The campground offers basic amenities, including vault toilets and water spigots, but no electricity. Campsites are suitable for both tents and RVs, making it a convenient base for multi-day riding trips. The area also includes a day-use parking lot for those coming just for the day.
