One-Hour Guided Tour: This one-hour, ½-mile guided walk is perfect for families and history enthusiasts. With no stairs and easy access, it’s a great way to learn about the cave’s Civil War connections, Native American history, and rare cave-dwelling creatures like blind cave salamanders and bristly cave crayfish.
Wild Tour: For the more adventurous, the Wild Tour offers a thrilling two-hour journey into the deeper parts of the cave, lit only by headlamps. Expect to wade through water and climb natural obstacles as you experience the cave in its raw, untouched form. (Ages 12 and up; advance booking required.)
History:
Smallin Cave holds a rich tapestry of stories, dating back thousands of years. It was first inhabited by the Osage Indians, and there is evidence that members of the Cherokee tribe also called the cave home. Archaeological digs have uncovered relics of Native American life, including signs of chert mining, used for creating tools and arrowheads.
During the Civil War, Smallin Cave played a mysterious role in the conflict. Local folklore suggests that Union soldiers used the cave for storing ammunition and artillery in preparation for the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, a major conflict just 12 miles away. The cave’s remote location made it an ideal hideout for Union spies, and many believe the cave harbored soldiers and supplies during the war.
In the years following the Civil War, the area was also affected by the Bald Knobbers, a vigilante group known for their violent actions in the aftermath of the war. Their presence in Christian County and the surrounding areas left a lasting impact, as they sought to bring justice—often with brutal methods—during a time of tension and unrest.
The cave’s significance extends beyond its human history. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, an early American explorer, wrote extensively about Smallin Cave in his journal from 1818. His vivid descriptions of the cave were later included in publications like National Geographic (1923) and the Ecological Society of America (1948).
