What to Expect

What is a Food Hall?

A food hall is typically a collection of small, locally-developed restaurant concepts or new creations from the minds of local chefs, start-up entrepreneurs, and restaurateurs. They offer an assortment of unique food and beverage items that are usually cooked from scratch using fresh ingredients. In contrast, food courts are generally filled with national chain restaurants offering little scratch cooking and limited brand variety.

At 14 Mill Market, you’ll find 10 unique culinary selections for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, as well as a full-service bar with 16 taps featuring local breweries.

History:

The story of 14 Mill Market begins long before its current incarnation. It traces back to 1839, when Samuel and Nancy Railsback purchased the property from the US government. Although they never lived there, their investment marked the start of a long, evolving history.

  • 1839: Samuel and Nancy Railsback purchase 80 acres of land from the US government, making the first recorded transaction for what would become 14 Mill Market’s property.
  • December 1872: Albert Stiffler and his wife, Leah Nokes, acquire the property from the McConnell family for $300. They build a log cabin and likely the first hand-dug well in Nixa, which remains on site to this day. Albert’s barn once stood where 14 Mill Market is now located.
  • 1929: The land is divided among the heirs of Leah and Albert Stiffler, including ED Darr, WA Stiffler, Vadie Glidewell, Ella McWilliams, Dora Barber, and JF Stiffler. Dora, married to JP “Pap” Barber, eventually consolidates the property and passes it on to their son, Theo Barber, and his wife, Bernice.
  • March 28, 1958: WA “Barney” Wisner purchases the property, marries his wife Louise, and builds the “Wisner Feed Mill” within six months. This development propels Nixa’s agricultural growth in the 1950s and 1960s. Known for his business acumen, Barney played a pivotal role in the community, including being one of the original investors in the Nixa Bank in 1958.
  • September 15, 1976: The Wisners sell the mill and property to Rex and Lavada, and Dale and Joyce Deffenderfer, who rename it “D and D Feed and Farm Supply.” Later, ownership transfers to David and Phyllis Atkinson in the late 1980s, who continue to operate the feed store.
  • May 14, 2021: Rich and Leah Callahan purchase the feed mill and the surrounding 3.6 acres, breathing new life into the site as they develop it into the 14 Mill Market we know today.
